About the Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Holy Cross College, Agartala, began offering the General course from 2009 and introduced the Honours programme in 2015. Since then, the department has been committed to fostering critical thinking and social awareness among students, equipping them to engage meaningfully with the world around them. Our academic programs are designed to help students understand and analyse the structures, institutions, and inequalities that shape human society, while also engaging with contemporary social issues and possible solutions.

Backed by a team of dedicated faculty members with expertise in diverse areas of sociology, the department offers a vibrant learning environment. Students benefit from excellent infrastructure, including smart classrooms, access to a well-resourced library, and a multi-media resource centre that supports both teaching and research.

Our curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical engagement, encouraging students to explore multiple sociological perspectives. A wide range of elective options ensures interdisciplinary exposure, while personalized academic support is provided to address the varied learning needs of our students.

To enrich academic life, the department regularly organizes seminars, conferences, and workshops that expose students to current national and international sociological debates.

Areas of teaching and research include: Sociology of Religion, Family, Marriage and Kinship, Gender, Development, Education, Work, Rural and Urban Society, Economic and Political Sociology, Criminology, Population Studies, Environmental Sociology, and Sociology of North East India.
